Santory – HFRI

The SANTORY project is an ambitious research initiative aimed at understanding and mitigating risks associated with volcanic eruptions, landslides, seismic activity, and the release of hazardous metals in marine environments, specifically in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Centered on the Kolumbo submarine volcano near Santorini, SANTORY is constructing an advanced seafloor observatory featuring state-of-the-art marine technology. This observatory integrates hyperspectral and temperature sensors, a radiation spectrometer, fluid and gas samplers, and pressure gauges to monitor the most active underwater volcano in the region.

Through the continuous collection of chemical, physical, and microbiological data, the project enhances knowledge of volcanic and seismic hazards, provides real-time environmental insights, and bolsters preparedness for events like tsunamis.

Funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, SANTORY promotes international collaboration and supports improved natural hazard mitigation strategies for submarine volcanic environments
